We are living through a moment of profound change. Artificial intelligence is reshaping creativity. The climate crisis is redefining our relationship to the planet. Ideas about authorship, community, and identity are shifting beneath our feet. Artists are among the first to feel these tremors—and are uniquely positioned to help the rest of us make sense of them.
This is why Williamstown Theatre Festival is launching the WTFestival Commission, a new program investing in artists at the earliest and most consequential stage of their work, as they grapple with three defining topics of our time: Innovation & Creativity, People & Planet, and Women’s Power & Presence.
The WTFestival Commission invests in artists as they imagine what comes next: giving them the time, resources, and freedom to engage with these issues and create the work of tomorrow.

"Williamstown moves the art form forward. It's a safe, beautiful place to work on new material or material that's being imagined in a new way. It takes risks."
Audra McDonald, Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award-winning performer & Festival alumna
Why Williamstown?

Because what starts here changes what comes next.
For more than seven decades, Williamstown Theatre Festival has served as a laboratory for artists to challenge prevailing ideas, explore new forms, and revolutionize storytelling.
The Festival fosters the freedom to experiment and provides the resources to take bold risks, empowering visionary collaborations that create lasting cultural impact.
The WTFestival Commission carries that catalytic role forward. Drawing on an extraordinary artistic community, Williamstown is investing in artists with the capacity to transform our cultural narrative. What begins here flows outward into the global entertainment landscape. It moves from stage to screen, from artist to audience, and from a single brave idea into a conversation that reaches far beyond the work itself.
