Directing Assistantship

Directing Assistantship

The Directing Assistantship is the intermediate-level training program at WTF for individuals who have chosen a career in directing. Directing Assistants assist a professional director on one of the Main Stage productions and also direct the Non-Equity Company in two projects presented to the Festival and the local communities. Assistants are generally graduate students in directing and have had significant experience as a director and assistant director. Directing Assistants are responsible for their own daily living expenses and pay $600 for housing on the Williams College campus.

HOW TO APPLY

To apply for a directing assistantship, please submit the following:

1. A cover letter and current resume with address, phone number and e-mail address.

2. Two written recommendations from people who can assess your qualifications and potential as a director. Please submit the title and contact information for the above with the letters of recommendation and note that all recommendations should be included with the rest of the submission.

3. Please answer the following questions in some detail (each answer should not exceed one typed page):

a. Describe a project you would like to direct with a small cast and limited technical resources. We are interested in seeing what kind of work intrigues you as a director. Please describe fully why this play/project matters to you.
b. What can you tell us about yourself as an artist? Possible subjects include your goals, influences, reasons for becoming a director, discussion of a project you directed or of a recent production you loved or hated. This is an opportunity to tell us something about yourself that you do not feel was covered in the previous section.
c. What kind of director would you like to assist and why.

4. A DVD of your recent directing work is recommended but not required. DVDs will be returned only if a self-addressed stamped, envelope is enclosed.

When mailing your application, please be sure to specify in your letter that you are applying for the Directing Assistantship. The final deadline for all materials to be postmarked is February 2, but we urge you to submit your application as soon as possible.
